Betrayed by the System: Parenting in a Broken World of DCFS and Courts

Parenting a teen is hard enough, but when you add adoption, disobedience, and a system designed to “help,” things can take a sharp turn into chaos. We learned that the hard way when what started as a typical grounding—yes, we took away her phone—spiraled into something much bigger than we ever expected.

Our daughter, like most teens, wasn’t thrilled about her punishment. But instead of just complaining to friends or slamming her bedroom door, she decided to take things up a notch. She went to her school, pointed the finger at us, and accused us of abuse. Next thing we knew, the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) was knocking on our door, ready to investigate the "monsters" she made us out to be.

It didn’t matter that her claim was false. Once DCFS steps in, the assumption is that the parents are guilty until proven innocent. And from that moment, everything changed. Seeing how easily she could get the system on her side, our daughter doubled down on her rebellion. If she couldn’t get removed from the house with the abuse claim, she was determined to get kicked out through sheer disobedience.

We felt like we were suddenly cast as villains in a story we didn’t write, directed by a system that seemed to encourage her rebellion. It wasn’t just that DCFS had failed us—they were fueling the behavior we were trying to correct.

For parents who are silently battling these feelings, wondering if they’re at fault, let us be the ones to tell you: You are not alone, and it’s not your fault. DCFS can sometimes feel more like a witch hunt than a support system, where the parents are always the witches. Instead of helping families, they often make things worse, and in our case, they became an unexpected ally in our daughter’s rebellion.

This blog isn’t just about our story—it’s about every family dealing with the frustrations of a system that’s supposed to help but often ends up tearing things apart. If you've ever felt like the court system is a joke or watched DCFS escalate a situation instead of defusing it, know that we’re right there with you. You're not alone in this fight; together, we can start speaking out.
